Foundation Failure in Brick, NJ
Challenge
Quality 1st Basement Systems was contacted by a homeowner from Brick, NJ who was showing signs of serious foundation failure. Senior Design Specialist, Javier Hoyos Romero went out to meet with the homeowner, do a full inspection of the foundation, and design a solution.
Javier noticed several stair-step cracking on the exterior of the foundation as well as the interior of the foundation as well. Some of the cracks were large enough that sunlight shined through to the inside the crawl space. Javier declared this foundation to be unstable. Once the walk through was completed, Javier sat down with the homeowner to explain why cracks formed and why he recommended Helical Piers to be the best solution to stabilize the homes' foundation.
Solution
Javier explained that settlement is the movement the home experiences when the soil below the home can no longer support the weight. This causes the foundation to shift, sink and settle. When the foundation shifts, it begins to crack, windows and doors start to stick, and your interior walls begin to crack as well.
Helical Piers are installed to permanently stabilize the home. The soil is removed in preparation for the Helical Pier installation. The first pier section is screwed into the ground using specialized equipment. Additional steel sections are added to extend the pier to the appropriate depths and capacities, and a steel foundation bracket is connected to the helical piers and attached to your foundation's footing. Next, the weight of the home is transferred through the piers onto the competent load-bearing soils deep below the surface. The Helical Piers then lift the home back towards its original position.
With the help of Javier and Project Manager Jonathan Neira, our Quality 1st Team stabilized this Brick, NJ, homeowner's foundation. We provided this homeowner with peace of mind that their family and home are now safe and that they no longer have to worry about future foundation problems.
