Sandy surge powers basement specialist
Even before Sandy hit, the basement waterproofing firm Quality 1st Basement Systems had outgrown its Perth Amboy facility and was preparing to move to a larger space in Aberdeen. Then, along came the post Sandy surge in demand for foundation repairs and waterproofing, which will likely yield an additional 2,000 projects on top of the nearly 2,500 the firm does per year, according to general manger Robert Cherry.
A basement waterproofing job typically involves installing a drainage system under the basement floor, connected to a sump pump, Cherry said. The company is handling the surge in waterproofing work while renovating the 30,000-square-foot building it, acquired in Aberdeen to house the offices and warehouse of the 22-year-old firm, which has 120 employees and about $10 million in annual revenue. The company expects to move to the new facility this spring.
Quality 1st Basement Systems serves market stretching from Ocean to Bergen and the five boroughs of New York. The company lost power for two weeks after Sandy, and kept itself going with generator power.
