The Incorrect Method of Basement Waterproofing

Many of the basement waterproofing companies that you will talk to will offer basement sealing. Internal basement sealing involves applying some type of hydraulic cement, rubber or tar to the inside cement walls of your home. The sealant does not allow for water permeation or leaking. Unfortunately the sealant quickly peels off due to the hydrostatic pressure of the water in the soil surrounding your home's foundation.

External sealing works much better. It is much the same process with the the same waterproofing materials but the sealant or epoxy is applied to the outside of your basement wall. However, to reach the external wall your yard, walkways, driveways need to be dug up. This option quickly becomes very expensive and destructive.

The Correct Method of Basement Waterproofing

So internal basement waterproofing sealants do not work and external sealing is prohibitively expensive. At Quality 1st in Staten Island we take a better approach. You cannot prevent water from entering your basement. Since there is constant water pressure pressing against your basement wall either the epoxy sealant will fail or the water will find another entrance into the basement. Waterproofing epoxies and sealants, whether in a generic DIY kit or via a waterproofing 'professional', are not the answer.

Basement Waterproofing in Staten Island

Instead of fighting the losing battle of crack repair and water permeation we instead simply redirect the water. A french drainage system is installed along the inside perimeter of your basement. The hidden drainage channel collects any entering water and funnels it to a high-efficiency sump pump which pumps the water out and safely away from your home's foundation. You have a permanently dry basement unlike internal basement sealing and a basement waterproofing system that didn't empty your savings account unlike external basement sealing.

Along with the basement waterproofing system we can also install an energy-efficient basement dehumidifier that maintains the relative humidity of the space. By keeping the basement dry and the air dehumidified mold and rot growth is prevented. We are so confident in our waterproofing system that we provide a transferable, lifetime dry-basement warranty. We are the answer to your waterproofing needs in Staten Island.

Permanent Crawl Space Repair

For those Staten Island residents who have a crawl space instead of a basement we provide similar waterproofing services. To waterproof the bottom of your home we use crawl space encapsulation. Having open, vented crawl spaces in the old building code was a mistake resulting from bad home science. Unfortunately you may have an older home that purposefully has a vented crawl space.

Crawl Space Repair in Staten Island

To fix the problem we seal all the crawl space vents and provide a sealable entrance to the crawl space. We then lay down a thin layer of foam insulation on the floor and rigid foam insulation on the walls. A layer of thick vinyl vapor-barrier is placed on top of the insulation and sealed. The area is now rid of outside air and water. By also installing a crawl space dehumidifier we control the relative humidity of the space preventing mold and rot from developing. You now have a clean, dry crawl space and warm, mold-free floors.

In addition to our crawl space encapsulation and sealing solutions, we offer homeowners of Staten Island permanent crawl space repair. If your home is suffering from drywall cracks, uneven floors, doors or windows not properly closing, odds are you have a sinking or sagging crawl space. We offer a wide variety of products and solutions to help improve and permanently repair your home's crawl space

If you are looking to repair your home's crawl space, contact us today for a FREE crawl space repair cost quote!

Warranted Home Foundation Repair

To ensure we have the right tools for your foundation repair project we have a host of different foundation repair products. For bowing walls we use wall anchors to pull the wall back to its original position. If you are property restrictions on the area around your home we can also use I-Beam Wall braces or a carbon wall reinforcing system. For sunken floors over your crawl space we install crawl space support jacks. Finally, if your entire foundation has begun to sink we have foundation piers and slab piers to drill down to load bearing soil and lift your home back to its original position.

We are part of the Foundation Supportworks network which means the foundation repair products that we use have been designed and tested by structural engineers. We know that they work and we provide a 25 year warranty against manufacturing defects. Our installation experts are trained and experienced. You can expect fast installation of a permanent foundation solution.

Concrete Leveling & Lifting in Staten Island

Traditionally sunken concrete slabs have been fixed with a method known as mudjacking or slab jacking. This involves drilling large holes into the concrete slab and then pumping a pressurized mud/cement slurry underneath the slab through the holes. The pressured slurry lifts the slab back to its original position and then cures to form a solid base.

Concrete Lifting and Leveling in Staten Island

This method has been used by foundation contractors for years. We have greatly improved the method. Instead of using a thick concrete slurry to lift the slab we use PolyLEVEL, an expansive polyLEVEL foam. In much the same way the foam is injected through holes beneath the slab where it expands to fill any voids and lifts the sunken slab. However, PolyLEVEL has many advantages over traditional mudjacking.

First PolyLEVEL is injected through much smaller holes. It is also much lighter than the slurry which means no additional stress on a weak soil base. It is not biodegradable so it won't be washed away with rainfall. Lastly it cures much, much quicker. While you have to wait days for concrete to cure PolyLEVEL reaches 90% strength in less than an hour! We use PolyLEVEL to fix sunken sidewalks, driveways, stairs, pool decks, patios and more.

Job Stories From Staten Island, NY
Concrete Walkway Repair in Staten Island, NY

A homeowner in Staten Island, New York made a call to Quality 1st Basement Systems when they noticed their concrete walkway was beginning to sink and become unlevel. This happens because concrete is often poured over backfilled soil. Over time, this soil settles and creates voids underneath, causing the concrete to shift. This could be dangerous because someone could trip and injure themselves.

The homeowner was connected to our customer service representative where they were matched with our System Design Specialist, Jonathan Seminerio. Jonathan provided an inspection of the home and he noticed how the concrete was sinking, and he suggested they use polyurethane foam to lift it.

Our foreman arrived at the job site and began the process of using the PolyLevel Injection System. This is done by drilling tiny holes into the slab and injecting the foam into the voids underneath. This process can be completed within a day. PolyLevel is a lightweight solution that will not add weight to the existing soil underneath.

When the job was complete, the homeowner was happy with the outcome. They were able to safely walk on their concrete walkway without the hazard of tripping.

Crawl Space Sealed in Staten Island, NY

A homeowner in Staten Island, New York was experiencing water and moisture getting into their crawl space. This occurs because the soil around the foundation becomes saturated during heavy rainfall. This wet soil creates hydrostatic pressure and pushes water to seep in through the walls. A wet crawl space can have many negative effects such as musty smells, damp carpets, increased energy bills, and even mold growth and pests.

The homeowner contacted Quality 1st Basement Systems and our System Design Specialist, Mike Fiorillo, provided an inspection of the home and helped them find a solution to this issue. Upon his inspection of the site, Mike saw how the crawl space was attracting moisture and water. Mike suggested they encapsulate the crawl space to seal it from the earth's elements.

Our foreman, Luis Aguirre, arrived on the site and installed the CleanSpace Vapor Barrier System. This system will ensure that the crawl space keeps moisture and water out, and stays dry. This is installed by removing debris from the crawl space, leveling uneven surfaces, carefully fitting the system to the crawl space, and then installing it with drilled-in spikes and fasteners. CleanSpace gives the crawl space a bright appearance and makes for the perfect storage space.

When the job was complete, the homeowner was satisfied with the outcome. Their crawl space was transformed into a bright storage space, and they no longer had to worry about moisture and water getting in.

Wet Basement Repair in Staten Island, NY

A homeowner in Staten Island, NY discovered their basement walls were leaking every time it rained, causing puddles in their basement. They knew this would lead to serious issues, so they needed to find a solution fast. After asking their neighbors, the homeowner was referred to Quality 1st Basement Systems.

After a quick phone call with our customer service representative, an appointment was scheduled for our System Designs Specialist, Javier Romero, to go and fully inspect the basement. Javier arrived at the home, on time, and fully inspected the basement; after fully inspecting the basement, Javier then recommended our WaterGuard French Drain System and Triple Safe Sump Pump would be the perfect solution for the homeowner.

Finished Staten Island Basement

When Jason from Staten Island decided to refinish his basement he was choosy about the floor. He knew a concrete slab could have water vapor issues even with a waterproofing system installed, so he called Quality 1st Basement Systems. Nick Biris, a System Design Specialist, met with Jason to explain the best options for a dry and healthy basement floor.

Nick recommended the ThermalDry Flooring System. Carpets and wood floors are never a good option for a basement. Water vapor can pass through resulting in soggy carpets, rotting wood and a perfect breeding ground for mold. ThermalDry’s unique design prevents water vapor from passing through and is unaffected by mold. The raised pegs on the bottom of the ThermalDry Flooring create an air space preventing water vapor from getting trapped. ThermalDry comes in tile, carpet, or a wood-look parquet that will suit any décor. Jason chose the Canyon Beige tile, a more neutral color that would go well with the furniture he planned to put in this basement.

Juan Garcia, a Quality 1st Flooring Installation Specialist, brought the crew out to Staten Island and had Jason’s basement floor installed in record time. Jason loves the attractive finished look of his basement and loves to show off his Quality 1st Basement floor to everyone.
